The only child of NBC television news producer Sy Kravitz (1924–2005) and actress Roxie Roker, Leonard Albert Kravitz was born in New York City (1929–1995).
His mother was of Bahamian and African-American ancestry, and she hailed from a Christian home. While his father had a Russian-Jewish background.
Al Roker, a television weather presenter, is a second cousin of Kravitz through his mother relating far from their grandfathers who were brothers.
