Tony Christie Career:

In the 1960s, he began his singing career by appearing in clubs and on the cabaret circuit. In 1970, he released “Yellow River,” his debut single, which peaked at number one in the UK.

But it was his 1971 single “Is This the Way to Amarillo” that cemented his reputation in the music business and established him as a household figure.

The song was a smash in the UK and peaked at number 18 on the charts. It is still one of his most well-known songs today.

He sang the solo song “On this Night of a Thousand Stars” and the duet “Eva And Magaldi / Eva Beware Of The City” with Julie Covington while portraying Magaldi in the original 1976 album recording of the musical Evita.

He also attempted to represent the UK in the 1976 Eurovision Song Contest with the song “The Queen of the Mardi Gras,” but came in third place, behind eventual contest winners Brotherhood of Man.
